The STIHL RZ 972 EFI features a 40 hp Vanguard EFI engine with 993 cc displacement and a 72-inch fabricated cutting deck with three blades. It includes an electric starter, electric PTO, and an 11-gallon fuel tank with fuel gauge.

The mower is equipped with a ZT5400 transmission, 10-inch cast iron greaseable spindles, and a cutting height range of 1.5 to 5 inches with 13-position manual spring adjustment. It offers forward ground speeds of 0–12 mph and reverse speeds of 0–5 mph.
